My name is David Bowman.
I’m an HCPC-registered paramedic and I’ve spent nineteen years working in the Ambulance Service here in Northern Ireland. Fourteen years as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and five years as a Paramedic.
My career began in 2007, and in that time I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible people, in extraordinary situations, across cities, towns and some very rural places where postcodes can be merely a suggestion.
This site is a collection of thoughts from nearly two decades on the frontline. It’s written for the experienced staff who will recognise the moments, for those just starting out who are finding their feet, and for the public who want to understand a little more about what really happens behind the blue lights.
Expect honesty, a bit of dry humour, and a realistic look at the job — the good, the bad and everything in between.
The Journey So Far
Started in the Ambulance Service
Began my career in 2007, stepping into a job that would shape my life in ways I could never have imagined.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Fourteen years on the road as an EMT. A steep learning curve, unforgettable people and countless lessons.
Paramedic
Five years as a Paramedic. Same commitment, greater responsibility, and a continued passion for the job.
Nineteen Years in Numbers
More Than Just a Job
After nineteen years, my head is full of stories — the calls, the people, the places, the decisions and the moments that don’t fit into a PRF.
I started writing to make sense of it all. To reflect, to learn, and to share a side of the job that often goes unseen. The moments between the calls, the humour, the challenges, and the human side of ambulance work.
I hope these stories give an honest and authentic insight into a world that many never see, and that they resonate with anyone who has been part of this unique community — whether you wear the uniform, support someone who does, or are simply curious about what happens behind the blue lights.
